“It is way past time to build a massive wall to secure our southern border – and nobody can build a bigger and better wall than Donald Trump.”[i]– Donald Trump
“We’re going to teach them a strong lesson in November, that (Democrats) do not own our vote.”[ii]– Mayra Flores
The recent victory of Mayra Flores in her special election, and the reactions, like the reactions to Trump’s gains in Latino support in the 2020 election, represent the professionalization of the Democratic party and media, resulting in a party that does not reflect working- and middle-class voters. The Democratic party has fully incorporated intersectional ideologies imported from universities, and this is not as many on the right argue, a rise of ‘neo-Marxism’ or radical leftism. It is simply virtue signalling. Non-white voters are leaving the Democratic party in droves, and although the Republican party may not be any better, they at least do not come with the identity politics baggage their opposition does. Conservatives often oversimplify the shift in minority support as rejection of socialism and radical policy. The ideology of the Democratic party is more aptly described as woke corporatism. Policies on trans ideology and diversity and equity may appear on the surface as the incorporation of radical leftism, but it is simply the Democrats wearing a veil of compassion and morality. Underneath this veil is a motley collection of characters as cretinous as the Republicans. The infamous meme depicting bombs dropping under Republican rule being plain old bombs, juxtaposed with bombs bearing pride flags and black squares dropping under Democratic rule illustrates this veil of woke corporatism. A tenet of woke corporatism is a nonsensical jargon packed with terms like Latinx and birthing person. Latinx is a term taken from the halls of increasingly woke universities and is an attempt to replace the gendered referents Latino and Latina with a more ‘inclusive’ term. These moves to make ideas and concepts more inclusive only succeed in creating an exclusive community of woke elites, who speak in a jargon that is akin to Newspeak as spoken in George Orwell’s 1984. Language is butchered and modified until it is unrecognizable to the commoners. This distorted language is seeping into the mainstream. It is the language of the ruling liberal class, and has received tremendous backlash, and terms such as Latinx have been rejected.
The Hispanic vote continues to shift from the Democrats to the Republicans. Ruy Teixeira, who once wrote about the influx of non-white citizens as a massive boon to the Democratic party, which he saw proven in the electoral success of Barrack Obama, writes now on his Substack raising alarm about the reversal of his original thesis.[iii] He recently exited the left wing think tank he worked for and began working for a conservative think tank.[iv] His story shows the groupthink that now clings onto ideas that do not comport with reality. Teixeira’s deviation from the narrative means he can no longer associate with the diversity obsessed elites in Washington and the corporate media. Thus, he is now a pariah.
The headlines breaking the news of Mayra Flores’ win show a ruling class unable to reflect on a trend that obliterates the narrative around Trump and the GOP that they have devoted themselves to with such fervor. The prevailing narrative, that Trump is a white supremacist dictator who intends to impose a white ethno-state, driven by a movement primarily made up of white men, is more a religious doctrine than actual truth. There are countless examples of election results and polling that disproves this. This is not to say that there is no truth to such criticisms of Trump, he has made racist and demeaning statements and some of his immigration policy stemmed from this, like the child separation policy and the Muslim travel ban, however, the increase in non-white support for him in the 2020 election, even in 2016, shows that there is far more nuance than liberal corporate media would have us believe. The main issues that have led to the shift in Hispanic support for Republicans, shown in the recent election of Mayra Flores, are the transformation of the Democratic party from a working-class party to a party populated by white collar professionals, academics, and woke elites. Just like the Republican party, the Democratic party became a corporate party, with all the backdoor dealmaking and war mongering this entails. Another issue is the woke veil worn by the Democratic party. The Republican party is a wolf, and the Democratic party is a wolf wrapped in a pride flag. Jill Biden’s speech delivered at a Latinx summit, in which she noted Hispanic Americans are as diverse as “breakfast tacos”, is an example of how out of touch the Democratic party is with voters.[v] Latinx is roundly rejected by Hispanic Americans, as shown in a poll by Pew Research, about 3% use the term, and one in four have not heard of the term at all.[vi] A foundational issue is the Democratic party being beholden to the Trump and his movement are white supremacy narrative, and this taints the analysis offered by outlets like the New York Times and The Washington Post. The liberal class is unable to reconcile what is happening with the doctrine they live by. This is captured by the idiotic concept noted by Cristina Beltran on NPR following the 2020 election of ‘multiracial whiteness’.[vii] Her interviewer, Lulu Garcia-Navarro, asks her after she provides a brief explanation of what she means, “So what you’re saying, essentially, is that people of other races and ethnicities want to benefit from white privilege by supporting it.”, to which she responds “Right”.[viii] This sort of discussion is short sighted and counter-productive, as Fraser Myers notes, “A certain amount of mental gymnastics has to be performed to place these non-white (alleged) racists alongside whites. And so ‘multiracial whiteness’ is born.”[ix] That is all this is, mental gymnastics in place of reevaluations of presumptions. Those like Ruy Teixeira, who offer introspection, are ostracized, and excluded from the woke elite circle. Those who are supposedly the most inclusive among us are the most exclusive, and Hispanic Americans, feeling excluded from the party that purports to represent them, are shifting their vote to Republicans. It is unclear whether this is a permanent trend, and it represents the failings of the Democratic party more than it represents any success or savvy of the Republican party. A recent Quinnipiac poll shows that Biden’s approval among Hispanic voters is a paltry 19%, with 70% disapproving.[x] This one of many signals that the midterms will be a massacre for the Democrats, as even the electorates they presume to have a stranglehold over are fleeing them.
The rejection of the term Latinx reveals the disconnect between the insane ideas concocted in universities and how they translate to the real world. The actual response from Hispanic Americans to the term Latinx and the overall coddling approach to them by the Democratic party is a primary factor that explains the ongoing shift we see. The absurdity of Latinx as terminology is definitive of the absurdity of the entire growing woke terminology is a turnoff. The professionalization of the Democratic party and full takeover of woke elites is a turnoff for Hispanic Americans. The reaction to Jill Biden’s speech at the Latinx conference from the liberal corporate media was typical. It focused on the right-wing outrage at the gaffe, pointing out that the GOP has no legs to stand on in its criticism of Jill Biden, or, as she insists, Dr. Jill Biden. Comments made by Trump calling Mexicans ‘rapists’ and ‘criminals’ are often noted. An example is an opinion column by Julio Ricardo Varela in which he writes “Spare the faux conservative anger against Biden. It’s just an extension of how Republicans have found the right strategy to combat “wokeness,” whether it’s weak comparisons to tacos or the obsession with the word Latinx.”[xii] It’s not an obsession of the right, and it is simply a resistance to stupid and insulting terminology by people outside of elite circles. Varela is more concerned with his opportunity to sputter “but Trump” than he is concerned with offering a thoughtful analysis. He comes close to thoughtfulness when he writes “To Democrats and Republicans, Latinos are still a cultural sideshow. Political parties continue to view the country’s second-largest voting cohort through simplistic lenses, many of which are rooted in years of institutional racism.”[xiii] Varela should note here that terms like Latinx are examples of how the Democratic party treats Latinos like a cultural sideshow.
Latinx has been roundly rejected by the very group it was assumed would embrace it. Pew Research polling done in 2019 showed that only one in four had heard of the term, and only 3% used it to identify themselves.[xiv] A more recent poll done in 2021 by a Democratic polling group, Bendixen & Amandi International, showed that only 2% of Latinos use the term, and up to 40% are offended by it, and 30% are less inclined to support a politician who uses the term.[xv] Following the release of this poll, the term was rescinded by Latino organizations, like the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and Domingo Garcia, president of LULAC, told Newsweek that they tried to use the term Latinx with younger people in their community, “but we found that even among young Latinos and Latinas, most did not use it and were not aware of its use, or were hostile to its use.”[xvi] The most significant finding of the poll done in 2021 is not that barely any Hispanic Americans identify themselves as Latinx, or that many had not heard of the term, it is that many are hostile to the term. This is an example of a well-meaning concept being used by the liberal class among each other, but when applied to ordinary voters, there is a backlash, which manifests in elections. The monopoly Democrats had on these voters is shrinking. The impressive gains that Trump made with non-White voters prove this, as well as Mayra Flores’ recent win. The reaction to these shifts is revealing, as the toxic ideology of universities has become a part of the Democratic party platform. The result is ebbing support from those the party purports to represent.
The push by Democrats to point at Trump as an alarming threat to America, especially non-white Americans, is a complete failure. There is some Hispanic support for Trump era policies, like the border wall, Title 42, and an overall tougher stance on immigration.[xvii] His support within this electorate increased, so while there may be some negative reactions and voter backlash from Hispanic Americans towards Trump and his policies, the results from the 2016 and 2020 elections demand a far more nuanced analysis than is provided by either side. Ideas cooked up in ivory towers do not sit well with voters. The Democratic party has become an elite party, and although the Republican party may not be any better in this regard, nor does this excuse its racist elements, the reaction to non-white support for Trump is equally vile and merits resistance. It also shows why the Democratic party has lost the ability to resonate with these voters. What they have become forces them to justify their approach to politics, and rather than question it, they double down. They are, in Friedrich Nietzsche’s words, the add-on liars.[xviii] It does not matter that Latinx has been rejected. Many outlets, corporations, and politicians still use the term, and woke corporatists will never surrender their crass and degrading form of identity politics.
It is often rich white liberals who craft terms like Latinx, under the assumption that they are protecting and helping minorities. As well as being degrading and insulting, this mindset shows a class of people more like their opposition than they would ever admit. The imposition of the woke lexicon is a form of tyranny, as George Carlin said, “Political correctness is fascism pretending to be good manners.”[xix] While Trump and his circle of crass buffoons are open about their biases and prejudices, the Democratic party, now captured entirely by the woke corporatist class, are deceitful and hide their sinister biases under a woke veil. Malcom X, on the white liberal, argued that they are more deceitful and hypocritical than the white conservative, and he said, “the white liberal is able to use the Negro as a pawn or tool in this political “football game” that is constantly raging between the white liberals and white conservatives.”[xx] Although he is discussing the exploitation of black Americans, his argument is applicable to the entire non-white electorate in America. Applied to the present, you can see Trump’s ugly views and rhetoric coming from a mile away, and in an Obama or a Clinton there is subtlety. Glenn Loury argues that the Democratic party and liberal elite obsess over race and whiteness and declare that only they can address it, and that this is a retrenchment of white centrality.[xxi] There is a vast disconnect between the citizenry and the woke corporatists whose tortured linguistics are only further distancing them from voters. What was once a certain destiny of demography, where inflows of immigration would ensure Democratic rule in the near and far future, is now uncertain. The election of Flores is an example of a continuing shift of the Hispanic electorate from the Democratic party. The media are unable to have a productive discussion about this shift as they are beholden to a toxic narrative that is only accelerating it. The deranged notion that voters are motivated only by ‘whiteness’, even if they are not white, is unhinged rhetoric. In response to the Virginia gubernatorial election in 2021 which saw Glenn Youngkin win the governorship and Winsome Sears, a Jamaican born politician, win the lieutenant governorship, Michael Eric Dyson stated that Winsome Sears is the “mouth of white supremacy.”[xxii] According to the New York Times, Flores represents the rise of “the far-right Latina”.[xxiii] This rhetoric is disgusting and beneath our contempt. Flores may have associations with Qanon and conspiracism, but the notion that she and voters are acting outside her ethnicity is offensive rhetoric. The reaction to minorities not doing what they’re supposed to do shows an insidious racism that has captured the Democratic party. While Trump was open about his prejudices, infamously in his comments in his speech announcing his candidacy for president in 2015, the Democratic party feels it is entitled to the support of minority voters. It has become used to not having to make its case for why its platform, or lack thereof, is better for them. Trump and his movement acted as a catalyst for a momentous shift. The white supremacy narrative centered around Trump is a mere fantasy. The success of Flores, ‘far-right Latina’, will not be the last nail in its coffin.
