Reign of the Illiberal Liberals II: The Eternal Question- How Can Anyone Vote Republican?

On a primary match between Trump and DeSantis for the 2024 presidential nomination, Biden said at a recent press conference “It’ll be fun watching them take on each other.”, and he’s right, but you know what will be even more fun? Watching a raving and darkly comedic Trump take on a fumbling and barely alive Biden. Do you know what would be an absolute blast to watch? A poised DeSantis takes on an elderly and bumbling Biden, which would result in such an electoral obliteration that DeSantis may be charged with elder abuse.

“But while we’ve made real progress as a nation, I know it’s hard for folks to see that progress in their everyday lives, and it’s hard to see the results from actions that we took while we have to implement what we’ve done.”[i]– Joe Biden

“I’m disappointed that it’s close. I thought abortion would get more women out to vote. It’s weird that the motivation isn’t there – maybe part of it is that we live in California? It would be devastating if Republicans win both chambers – not as devastating as Hillary Clinton losing in 2016 though. It’s weird to me that people don’t seem to realise how important voting on democracy is. Congress has little impact on inflation.”[ii]– Nuha Nazy, Californian Voter

“Fifty years from now, if historians are allowed to write in this country and if there are still free publishing houses and a free press — which I’m not certain of, but if that is true — a historian will say, what was at stake tonight and this week was the fact whether we will be a democracy in the future, whether our children will be arrested and conceivably killed,”[iii]– Michael Beschloss

As the results poured in, it is evident that the predicted red wave is a mere ripple. I would first like to say that I was wrong in my predictions. In some races, the Republicans dominated especially Florida, much to the chagrin of those chanting ‘DeathSantis’. Ron DeSantis won his election for Governor of Florida in 2018 by a small margin of 33,000 votes to Andrew Gillum, who is now charged with multiple counts including wire fraud and making false statements, and on Tuesday DeSantis won re-election by 1.5 million votes.[iv] Outside of Florida, the Republicans underperformed expectations on the right. In the Pennsylvania Senate race, Mehmet Oz lost to the bumbling John Fetterman, and in the Governors race, Josh Shapiro beat the lunatic Doug Mastriano, who was elevated by the Democrats in his primary race.[v] Fetterman, who suffered a stroke and can barely talk, is being toted as heroic and criticism of him is cast as ableism. An NBC reporter who interviewed him noted afterwards that in the conversation with him before the interview, he struggled with conversation, and his debate performance on October 25th was lackluster to be polite.[vi] Oz may be a terrible candidate as well, but the fact that the Republicans could not put together a winning coalition in the midst of Biden’s atrocious approval ratings, his failure to live up to his campaign promises, the overreliance on demonizing Trump supporters and spectacles like the January 6th hearings, and voters saying ahead of the elections that the economy was the primary issue for them heading into the midterms, is proof that like the Republican party, the Democratic party is inept and clownish.

Putting up ghastly candidates like Herschel Walker, Oz, and Mastriano was doomed to fail. Republican voters are not to blame, as conservative elites argue. Although they are right that the quality of candidates matters, blaming voters who have no power or money instead of offering them something is no solution. Some even blame the Libertarian candidates for assisting the Democrats in Pennsylvania and Georgia.[vii] This is ridiculous, just like the Democratic party blaming those who vote for the Green party for assisting Republicans, even going so far as to try and take Green party candidates off the ballot in some instances.[viii] This shows the hypocrisy of the Democratic party, as they complain about voter suppression and the spread of misinformation from both Republicans and Russia, yet they engage in bullying tactics as well, repeatedly proclaiming that democracy is on the ballot, when, democracy is gone, and ballots are cast to consolidate an illusory democracy.

Feel Good Voting

The Democratic party and their media operative’s declaration that every election is the most important election in US history is preposterous. Bill Maher cut a segment making this claim, and he seemed confused that polls showed that more people perceived that Trump did nothing wrong on January 6th, 2021, than before the J6 Committee hearings.[ix]  Panels on MSNBC and CNN were aghast at the fact that for many voters, the death of democracy is just not a top issue. As Graeme Wood notes bluntly in an article arguing that the pro-democracy rhetoric of the Democratic party hinders them instead of helping them, that “Three-point-five percent of voters care about democracy. I suspect that somewhat more care about earthbound issues.”[x] The voters who say they care about democracy are likely those who make up the remaining viewership of networks like MSNBC and CNN. The hosts who are in awe that for most voters’ democracy is not a major concern represent the growing disconnect between the ruling class and the citizenry.

To many in the punditry class voting Republican is voting incorrectly, especially if you’re an ethnic minority. While the turnout of young voters hurt the Republicans, it is in the long-term going to hurt the Democratic party, who has become the party of college educated liberals. ‘Gen Z’ and millennials who are hailed as a resistance to the GOP are in reality an indictment of what the Democratic party has become. It is not a ‘progressive wave’ as some claim. Yes, the GOP crashed and burned in many races they should have won, but no one on either side should be placing blame on any singular cause, whether it’s Trump’s antics, Libertarian voters, or young voters. The Democratic party is not, as those young voters believe, the party that represents them or is going to save them, nor are they the protectors of democracy. It is the Democratic party under Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama that did irreparable damage to the US, which became a party of the professional class and neoliberal elite. The Bush administration also did catastrophic damage, gutting civil liberties and starting fatalist adventurism abroad. The Democratic party, who have embraced the US security state and corporations, now purport to represent the interests of young voters and the future of the country, and yet, under Biden it has not kept key promises aimed at this demographic, like raising the federal minimum wage and establishing universal healthcare. Voting for Democrats is not the answer, nor is voting Republican.

As I said in my last post, I am not invested in the outcomes of elections anymore. I am simply offering my analysis of the results so far. It is clear from the results in Florida that the style of governance of DeSantis is incredibly popular, and that nominating Trump again in 2024 is likely not a smart strategy for the GOP. Again, pundits are unable to disconnect from their biases in covering elections and cannot fathom why people are still voting Republicans. How could they vote for them? Haven’t they been listening to our segments showing how the GOP has become a white nationalist party hell bent on destroying civil rights and who seek to set the country back several decades? No, they haven’t, and the proof is in their pathetic ratings, and in what voters are prioritizing. Blaming people with no power or money is not the answer. Democracy is not at stake, as it’s been gone a long time, and we are simply picking a preferred circus act. The spectacle of the January 6th hearings and the focus of the Democrats on proclaiming that voting for them is the correct way to vote. Noone gets to vote for those hidden in the network of castles where power is wielded, and technocrats in Silicon Valley, goons heading pharmaceutical companies, and psychopaths heading arms manufacturers have much more power than those who are elected, and their names are not on ballots. The CEO of Raytheon has untold power, as do former board members like Lloyd Austin, now the Secretary of Defense, and the Democratic party is in bed with these pillagers just like the Republican party is.[xi]

The GOP may have squandered what should have been a clean sweep, but the only loser here is the American people who are living in despair and are desperate for change. In a change election, the opposing party could not cobble together a winning coalition, however, dropping Trump outright is not the answer, as the forces that propel Trump are still flowing strong. This may happen, and if it does, both sides will have learned nothing. Until the Democratic party and those who celebrate their performance in the midterms realize that they are a contributing factor to the Trump movement, in some instances literally as they funded many MAGA aligned candidates, nothing in American will fundamentally change.[xii]

Did They Not Watch the January 6th Hearings?

Many political pundits and academics hyped up the stakes of this midterm election cycle. Republicans have taken the House, and since this has been finalized, the January 6th Committee will likely be dismantled.[xiii] Going into the midterms, the J6 Committee subpoenaed Trump. This was an act of desperation and an attempt to reinsert him into the political landscape.[xiv] It looks like it’s worked this time around, however, it is evident in polling and in the Democrats themselves funding extremist candidates that the democracy dies in darkness narrative is bunk, and that even the Democrats do not believe that deep down the GOP is a ‘threat to democracy’.

People still ask the eternal question, why do people vote Republican? For some, the answer is the prevalence of white supremacy, as white Americans broke for the GOP, both men and women, especially among those without college degrees.[xv] This is an inaccurate and gross assessment for two key reasons. Firstly, it’s not just white voters without college degrees who are voting for the GOP, it’s also increasingly minority voters without college degrees.[xvi] Being the party of the ‘educated’ is not much to brag about, as someone with a PhD in an identity politics related field is not more enlightened than someone who has worked as a janitor for a living. The janitor probably makes better conversation, or at the very least, they do not police your language and jokes. On the other side, the GOP being the party of the ‘uneducated’ is an oversimplification. Many people, especially poor white males, do not have the same opportunities to go to college as more affluent people, and yet, the narrative around college campuses and the White House is that white males have inherent opportunity and are always working with advantages in life. As more and more poor, despairing males are left out to dry and are told daily that they have immense power and privilege, their simmering rage will manifest in horrifying ways like mass shootings, pornography becoming even more depraved, and the growth of neo-Nazi groups. Dismissing these voters as the mere uneducated, the plebs, the deplorables, the dregs of society, is a huge factor in Trump’s electoral success in 2015-16 and in the electoral success of populist revolts across the Western world.[xvii] Secondly, the white supremacy narrative around the GOP also falsely implies that if you vote for the Democratic party, you are voting for the party who cares about minorities (unless you are a minority who lives in a Muslim country, then you are literal cannon fodder), and this is ridiculous. Using the term Latinx and advocating for black only spaces on college campuses is not caring for minorities. Treating minorities like children who need to have language and society softened for them is contemptible. Biden may have the most diverse cabinet in history, but a diverse band of criminals and clowns is still a band of criminals and clowns. People see this and the Democratic party is fooling less people every election.

Spectacles like the J6 Committee hearings are seen by voters for what they are-theater. The death of democracy narrative spun by media elites is an indulgence. While hosts like Bil Maher can scoff and shake their heads at those who go out and vote Republican, until Western media elites venture outside their bubbles and reconnect with ordinary citizens, the electoral success of the ‘wrong’ candidates will be met with indignation and confusion. The hyper partisanship that is hampering US domestic politics will continue as well, however, more importantly, the reigning ideology of the Washington establishment, neoliberalism, will be perpetuated by the one ruling party that operates under the guise of a two-party system.

Conclusion

One of the losers in this election cycle was Trump, whose chosen candidates, except for J.D Vance in Ohio, were destroyed, and this likely cost the GOP the Senate. Many independents are pointing out that the Republicans must drop Trump, and many on the right are seething as Trump is expressing incoherent thoughts on the midterm results on Truth Social, as well as taking swings at DeSantis. The success of DeSantis scares the Democrats, as he won Miami Dade County and majorities of the Hispanic vote in the entire state.[xviii]

One advantage of the Democrats doing better than expected in the midterms is that they will misinterpret the political landscape. Exit polls show that most people are dissatisfied or angry with the state of the country, and polls show that most people think the country is heading in the wrong direction, and the economy was a primary issue for voters.[xix] The Democrats not being clocked over these feelings of resentment and disenchantment is nothing to celebrate. Biden and his team are patting themselves on the back over their performance. As noted in the Politico West Wing Playbook the morning after the midterms, Biden’s economic advisers bragged in private that the mainstream media overhyped the electoral impact of inflation.[xx] Chief of Staff Ron Klain tweeted alongside a story noting ‘warning signs for Biden’ that “It’s almost self-parody at this point.”. Klain doesn’t realize it yet, but his administration is self-parody.[xxi] One Democratic operative spoke to the West Wing Playbook and said that Biden does not deserve all the credit for how the Democrats performed, “But it’s complicated. There’s something to be said for the guy who said he’d be a return to normalcy and get stuff done and he’s delivered on that.”[xxii] The delusion that Biden is doing an excellent job has been consolidated, and that is probably the major consequence of this election cycle that the GOP can capitalize on in 2024, as while Biden and his advisers are busy smiling like all is going smoothly, a DeSantis can shatter this bubble by manifesting voter dissatisfaction in a change election, which is what 2024 will be, whether the Democrats want to admit it or not.

As I’ve said multiple times before, I don’t think either of the major parties can offer a solution, but it would be entertaining to see DeSantis annihilate Biden in 2024 in a Reagan like landslide, which is what would happen, however, if Trump is the nominee in 2024, we will instead get a rerun of 2020. If he loses, we will have to listen to more tales of a stolen election, and Trump will be like Nikola Tesla, who in the last years of his life sat around on park benches feeding pigeons, muttering to himself. Trump will be muttering about how he was jobbed by the Democrats, and he will yell at passersby that he won, and the election was stolen. His outcries over the allegedly stolen election are as pathetic as Clinton’s.

If DeSantis is chosen as the nominee, then Biden and Kamala Harris stand no chance- it won’t even be a contest. The neoliberal elite know this. Yes, DeSantis is likely to govern as president in a style that is half Trump, half Reagan, as he will be fighting culture war issues, which is a pro, as the Biden administration’s focus on diversity and equity is toxic politics, and in foreign policy he will likely be militaristic and will escalate tensions with China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea, and this is a con. Having said that, where Trump is merely less horrible than his predecessors and Biden, DeSantis is slightly better. It is evident from the midterm results that he is a much better choice for 2024 than Trump.
