Take on the Week Ending February 9th

Tucker Carlson is a Traitor?

Tucker Carlson was spotted attending the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow on Saturday, February 3rd.[i] This sparked speculation on his reasons for being there. Many figured he was there to interview Russian president Vladimir Putin, an interview he has been trying to get for a few years now.

In 2021, Carlson, amid trying to book an interview with Putin, went on his FOX News show and alleged that the NSA had been spying on him, monitoring his text messages with a ‘Kremlin intermediaries’.[ii] One of these ‘Kremlin intermediaries’ was journalist Anya Parampil, who writes for The Grayzone.[iii] Through her work there, she established correspondence with a senior official in the Russian government, and she tried to help Carlson book an interview with Putin through this contact, Sergey Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister.[iv] Parampil notes that the reason she was characterized as a Kremlin intermediary, and by extension, Carlson was seen as communicating with a Kremlin intermediary, was that “US officials weaponized my mere existence, through innuendo, in order to suggest Tucker was involved with Kremlin agents. By undermining his credibility, they aimed to invalidate his character and by extension, his anti-war positions.”[v] That effort to undermine his credibility and his positions on Ukraine and other foreign policy issues continues and it explains the hostile reactions to his interview with Putin.

To illiberal liberals, Carlson is not a journalist, he is a tool of the Kremlin. Thus, anything he says is to be disbelieved. If Carlson’s positions are so obviously ridiculous or heinous, then they would speak for themselves, we wouldn’t need self-proclaimed Soviet history experts and autocracy experts to tell us that he is a Russian agent.

The idea that Carlson is a traitor, or that anyone who has the wrong opinion on Russia and Ukraine is, is preposterous and dangerous. It is partially what has soured US-Russia relations in recent years. It is also the primary driver of animus for Russia and avid support for Ukraine in the US. The illiberal liberal class is taking its revenge on Russia for causing Trump, Brexit, and myriad other ‘problem’ votes. Putin my be a horrid and cretinous figure, but it is still important to hear his perspective, just like it was crucial to hear the views of Osama bin Laden, Yasa Arafat, and Mao Zedong. However, for many, hearing from Putin, and Carlson interviewing him, is abhorrent and proof that Carlson is a mouthpiece for the Kremlin. Hillary Clinton captured this sentiment when she said in an interview MSNBC’s Alex Wagner that “I would not be surprised if he emerges with a contract with a Russian outlet, because he is a useful idiot.”[vi] Peter Zeihan argues that Carlson is “feeding the US Russian propaganda”, and CNN’s Oliver Darcy writes that the interview was “a massive propaganda victory for Putin, who can, – and will– now twist the encounter for his own ends.”[vii] Interestingly, Darcy notes that Carlson was chosen because, in the words of Putin’s spokesperson, “he “has a position that is different from the rest” of Western media.”[viii] It does not occur to Darcy that he may be seen as different not necessarily because he is beholden to the Kremlin, but because he is skeptical of Western narratives around Ukraine and other matters.

In many of these articles, Carlson is referred to as a “journalist” in air quotes, implying that he is not one. To these people, like Darcy and Zeihan, being a journalist is belonging to a sacred, protected caste of imps who have an incestuous relationship with the powerful, so it is stunning when they claim that Carlson enjoys a similar relationship with leaders of the bad countries, like Russia.

Scholar Anne Applebaum, a lauded ‘expert on autocracy’, writes on X that although many journalists have interviewed Putin in the past, “Carlson’s interview is different because he is not a journalist, he’s a propagandist, with a history of helping autocrats conceal corruption.”[ix] Applebaum was instrumental in advocating for the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, parroting claims that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and that he was working with al Qaeda, and she also defended the film director Roman Polanski after he was found to have raped a 13-year-old girl against arguments that he should be held accountable, instead of being allowed to live in exile in France.[x] Applebaum is a serial liar and propogandist. Thus, she should not be taken seriously when she makes ridiculous allegations of Carlson being a propogandist for Putin.

This is the type of person arguing that Carlson is not a journalist. They are what they claim to hate. Carlson, unbound from corporate overlords since his firing from FOX News, is free to speak his mind and to conduct an interview with whoever he wants to, from Stella Assange to Ice Cube. People like Applebaum are not so free. They are bound to serve the permanent regime. They lash out at Carlson out of duty and envy.

Jamie Dettmer, in an article for Politico EU titled ‘Tucker Carlson joins long line of ‘useful idiot’ journalists helping tyrants’, and he opens by remarking that “Tucker Carlson is far from being the first Western journalist to have aligned himself with the enemy.”, and he compares him to New York Times reporter Walter Duranty, who served as the bureau chief in Moscow from 1922 to 1936.[xi] During that time Duranty scored an interview with Stalin, and he did not report on the Holodomor, a famine in Ukraine that killed millions.[xii] Dettmer also references reporter John Reed, a socialist who supported the Russian revolution and was eventually charged with sedition.[xiii] Reed, along with Charles Ruthenberg, founder of the USA Communist Party, are buried in Moscow’s Red Square in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.[xiv] Dettmer remarks that “There’s probably space there for Carlson too.”[xv] This is both inane and disgusting. It’s inane because those buried in Red Square were either supportive or instrumental in the Russian revolution in 1917, and it is a communist monument. Carlson is not a communist, nor is Putin, so even if he supported Putin, it would not make sense to bury him there as recognition of this support. It’s disgusting because Dettmer may have some historical knowledge on ‘useful idiot’ journalists, but this knowledge is used to propagandize, not to enlighten. His claims that Carlson conducted his interview of Putin because he has affinity for him and is a propogandist is projection. In this article, Dettmer is fulfilling his role as a useful idiot of the permanent regime, smearing anyone who deviates from the official narrative on Russia and Ukraine.

Dettmer and Clinton are not the only propogandists working on behalf of the permanent regime against Carlson. Aleks Phillips in Newsweek argues that Carlson is “Russia’s gift that keeps on giving”, and that, according to ‘Russian disinformation experts’, Carlson is an asset in Putin’s goal of making Russian narratives more appealing to Westerners.[xvi] Morten Hammeken writes for Common Dreams that contrary to what Clinton and others say, Carlson is not a useful idiot, but that he “dances to the Kremlin’s tune because he is a useful ally.”[xvii] Carlson is an ally of Russia? His opposition to US funding for Ukraine is rooted in his principle that the American government exists to serve the American people, not the people of other nations. People often cite various comments from Carlson, like that he “is rooting for Russia.”, or his harsh criticisms of Ukraine and Volodymyr Zelensky as evidence of his loyalty to the Kremlin, not the US.

Those who smear Carlson as disloyal and claim that he is a Putin puppet should have a look in the mirror. They will see in their reflection an image of what they project onto others, like Carlson. Scholars and commentators in the illiberal liberal class are not against a Western journalist interviewing Putin, they are against a journalist, or in their minds, a “journalist”, who does not subscribe to Western narratives on Ukraine and foreign policy interviewing Putin. What makes Carlson an even bigger threat is his enormous audience and position of influence. Watching the interview was interesting, but watching the reaction to it was even more interesting and it revealed the desperation of the illiberal liberal class to retain their narrative on the Ukraine war.

The Senile Presidency

Special Counsel Robert Hur, who was tasked with investigating Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents, concluded in his report on the matter that he would not recommend Biden be prosecuted because a jury would find him to be “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”[xviii] Hur notes that Biden “willfully retained classified documents”, and the illiberal liberal class is touting this report as a ‘pro-Trump hit job’ that puts Biden’s age in the spotlight, undermining him leading into November’s presidential election.[xix] Some are comparing it to James Comey’s announcement that he would not prosecute Hillary Clinton in 2016, despite finding that she evidently broke the law by having classified emails on a private server, and how this apparently swung the election.[xx] Molly Jong-Fast opens an article for MSNBC responding to Hur’s report by writing “I remember where I was on Oct. 28, 2016, the day James Comey released his letter. I was at a health food restaurant with a Republican friend of mine. “This is going to lose her the election,” I told my friend. I felt like I was going to throw up. I knew what a Donald Trump presidency would mean for women, for all of us.”[xxi] What? That was going to lose her the election, not her repulsiveness? She goes on to write that “Not only did Comey make Trump president but then he wrote numerous very tedious books. He became a resistance hero, riding his regret all the way to the bank.”[xxii] The notion that Comey made Trump president, not the ignorance and elitism of people like Fast is absurd and yet, she is now sure that Attorney General Merrick Garland, by appointing Hur as Special Counsel, is ultimately responsible for the fallout from this report, which may be Trump’s return to the White House. Fast captures this when she says, “Shame on Attorney General Merrick Garland for letting this partisan hit job be released.”[xxiii] This delusion, that Biden’s mental faculties, not his age, but his cognition, is off limits and is only a concern for Republican partisans is both deranged and hypocritical. It is deranged because anyone who watches Biden try to talk for a minute can see that he is nowhere near mentally acute. Contrary to what most pundits are raving about, it is not Biden’s age that is concerning to people, it is his obvious mental disintegration. It is hypocritical because these same outlets, including MSNBC, were happy to question Trump’s mental fitness and partisans like Bandy X. Lee, who wrote a book compiled of essays diagnosing Trump’s mental illness, were paraded around and they used Trump’s statements on NATO, Russia, and Clinton as proof that he is a certified madman who belongs in an asylum, not the oval office.[xxiv] In this book there are essays that assess Trump’s sociopathy, his trust issues, and there is a proposal for an alternative body to assess the mental fitness of the president, since the 25th Amendment is apparently not sufficient.[xxv]

Weeks into Trump’s presidency, Democrats and their media operatives were calling his mental health into question, demanding that a psychiatrist be present in the White House and that there be a working group established by Rep. Earl Blumenauer to explore options for removing Trump from office based on him being mentally unfit to serve as president.[xxvi] Mental health professionals were given media appearances and some signed a letter to The New York Times declaring that “the grave emotional instability indicated by Mr. Trump’s speech and actions makes him incapable of serving safely as president.”[xxvii] There is no such keenness to platform or to even perform a mental assessment of Biden. The opposite occurs, as anyone who questions Biden’s mental fitness is decried as a pro-Trump operative. Pundits rush to assure us that he’s fine, and perfectly capable of serving as president. These goonish goblins have memory holed the campaign they waged to label Trump mentally ill, justifying various working groups and proposals to bypass the 25th Amendment and impeachment to remove him from office just days after he was inaugurated. However, Biden, whose brain has clearly turned into Jello, is in pristine shape, or so they tell us. As Bill McKibben argues in the LA Times, capturing the delusion of the illiberal liberal class, “Biden’s age is his superpower.”[xxviii]

The derangement of these arguments is evident and disturbing, but the hypocrisy is glaring and is what makes the reactions to Hur’s report nauseating. Rep. Jamie Raskin, who proposed the bill ‘Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity Act’ in 2017.[xxix] This bill would set up a committee that would evaluate whether the president is fit to fulfill his duties. On the other hand, in Raskin’s statement on Hur’s report, he expresses agreement with the conclusion not to prosecute Biden, but he then goes on to declare Biden’s actions as different than Trump’s, as Trump “obstructed efforts by the National Archives and law enforcement to recover hundreds of government documents by deliberately hiding them, lying about their whereabouts, and enlisting others to destroy and conceal evidence.” , and that he “willfully and unlawfully held onto hundreds of presidential and classified records, which he kept in a bathroom, ballroom, office, and other locations at Mar-A-Lago, and repeatedly showed them off to guests.”[xxx] Raskin may have missed Hur’s entire conclusion, as Hur notes that Biden did willfully hold onto classified documents. Aside from that omission, Raskin then concludes his statement by remarking that Oversight Democrats are willing to develop a bipartisan strategy to consolidate the preservation of classified material and presidential records. He does not refer to Hur’s observations of Biden’s poor memory at all. Where is his eagerness to set up a body to assess the mental acuities of the president, that he and others swore was not partisan and directed solely at Trump? It’s simple, Raskin and the rest of the illiberal liberal class are utter hypocrites. We should not expect more of them, nor should we pretend they’re ever acting on principles or values.

Biden is a symbol of the rotting US empire, blabbering, screaming at times, and stumbling around, yet clinging desperately to power. Fast says shame on Garland for appointing Hur. I say shame on her and the rest of the US political and media class for propping up oligarchs like Biden, and by proxy, the permanent regime, using any means necessary.
