“The president is a very sick man,”[i]– Cary T. Grayson
“I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said either,”[ii]– Donald Trump
In 1919, then President Woodrow Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke that left him paralyzed and bedridden, and there was a veil of secrecy around the reality of his ill health by his inner circle. Edith Wilson is often referred to as the secret president following the infirmity of her husband. Outside of Wilson’s inner circle, no one knew about his health, and the public was told he was suffering from exhaustion from his busy travel schedule. Eventually, Wilson’s infirmity went public and there were multiple calls for him to step aside. At first, he was adamant about seeking a third term (this is before there was a two term limit on the presidency), and some were trying to pressure his Vice President to assume the office of president, as no one close to Wilson would testify that he was unable to perform his duties as president, as is required to enact the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution.[iii]
Wilson’s personal physician, Cary T. Grayson, knew right away the seriousness of Wilson’s enfeebled and sickly state, but he kept this grave seriousness hidden, along with others close to Wilson, from the public and the rest of Washington. By 1920, when the public found out, it was too late, as there was an election looming and Wilson could not run, despite wanting to. James Cox won the Democratic nomination, and he went on to lose to Warren Harding, who is often cited as one of the worst presidents in American history, despite overseeing the ‘roaring 1920’s’.
The truth is that Wilson is one of the worse presidents in history. He is consistently praised for shaping the modern presidency; however, this is not a boon for his legacy, it is a stain.[iv] Wilson promised in his 1916 campaign to keep the US out of the First World War, even using the fact that he had not involved the US so far as proof that he would live up to this promise. He then proceeded to enter the US in the war upon re-election. After entering the US in the war, he also established the Sedition Act and the Espionage Act, which are a menace to free speech and the freedom of the press. One of Wilson’s political opponents, Eugene Debs, was charged under the Sedition Act, though his sentence was commuted by Harding in late 1921.[v]
Wilson was also a virulent racist. He held screenings of the Ku Klux Klan film Birth of a Nation at the White House and his appointment of staunch White Supremacist Josephus Daniels as Navy Secretary resulted in segregation in the US Navy.[vi] He should not be credited with entering WWI and breaking the grueling stalemate that the war in the trenches had become, as humiliating and punishing the Germans through the war’s brutal end and the Treaty of Versailles was a major catalyst for Germany’s dire economy and resentful society which led to Adolf Hitler’s election.[vii]
However, Wilson’s illness and his connection to liberal internationalism through his tireless defense of the League of Nations, which though it soon dissolved, eventually led to the creation of the United Nations, soften his image and distract from his abhorrent actions and despotic tendencies. We see the exact same scenario playing out in real time with Joe Biden and his mental decay, which was on full display in his debate with Donald Trump, a debate that he insisted on having, and that he had spent an entire week preparing for, and yet, he is refusing to back down from the presidential race and his inner circle, like Wilson’s did, is enabling his delusional egoism.
Despite the cries, and in the case of a Hollywood watch party including the likes of Rob Reiner and Jane Fonda, crying, of the illiberal liberal class, there is no way to hide from the American people the extent of Biden’s cognitive decline.[viii] The main takeaway from the debate was that his brain is liquid, as it was back in 2019 when he was running in the 2020 Democratic primary. Even then it was obvious that Biden is way past his prime, if he ever had one. From his stumbling and mumbling in the 2020 Democratic primary debates to the countless videos of him spewing absolute nonsense in numerous speeches, like when he called then British Prime Minster Rishi Sunak ‘Rashid Sanook’, or when he confused French President Emmanuel Macron for former French President Francois Mitterrand, who died in 1996, Biden has had gaffe after gaffe during his presidency.[ix] There are also myriad compilations on YouTube of Biden babbling incoherently and stepping away from the podium only to seemingly forget where he was and where was supposed to go, as well as turning to shake people’s hands when no one is there. Perhaps he can communicate with the dead.
Videos of these senior moments, like the recent footage of him at a concert fundraiser where Biden freezes as he starts to walk off the stage, only to be prodded and led by Barrack Obama, have been explained away by The White House as ‘cheap fakes’, alterations by the dastardly MAGA cult.[x] The stark truth is that Biden’s inability to speak and function has been known to anyone living outside the illiberal liberal media bubble. That so many were genuinely shocked at the reality of Biden’s feebleness reflects the isolation they remain in. Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, said just two weeks ago that not only is Biden competent, but he “is the best Biden ever!”, and following the debate debacle, he said solemnly that “Biden can run the White House, he can run the country effectively, despite the barrage of lies that constantly come at him like Donald Trump’s lies last night…But can he run for president in 2024?”[xi] Amid all his professed cultish love and admiration for Biden and his alleged transformational presidency, Scarborough admits through gritted teeth and with head hung in shame and sadness that Biden is likely to fail in November against Trump. David Remnick, Thomas Friedman, and Paul Krugman, and numerous others in the illiberal liberal class, all advocates for Biden and defenders of his mental fitness, responded to his debate performance by publishing articles asking that he step down.[xii]
Robert Reich writes in his article for The Guardian that “Biden is smart” and that he can show “energy and vitality”, citing his performance at his State of The Union Address at the start of the year, as well as a post-debate rally held in Raleigh, North Carolina.[xiii] Reich notes, after listing off the usual monikers for Trump, that “Joe Biden had good and often detailed answers to the questions put to him, but the debate was never going to be about the president’s answers. It was always going to be about his age.”, and this claim, that Biden had good, detailed answers, is completely contradicted where he later admits that “Sadly, Biden’s stiff, halting, withered delivery, coupled with his slack-jawed expression and frozen stare when not trying to form sentences, made him seem not just old but on the decline.”[xiv] If he had a withered delivery, unable to form coherent sentences, let alone arguments, how can he have provided cogent, elaborate answers, as he argues at the start of his article. Reich concludes that though, in his contradictory opinion, Biden can show energy and vitality, he can also show that someone who struggles to speak and walk “doesn’t seem to stand much chance of being re-elected president of the United States – even when his opponent is a twice-impeached convicted felon, pathological liar and dangerous sociopath.”[xv] This illustrates perfectly how the illiberal liberal class sees this presidential race. It is not between their preferred candidate and another who, though unruly and brash, mostly submits to their will. It is a contest between a sweet, accomplished old man who is merely succumbing to the frailties and mental decline that sometimes come with age, and a “twice-impeached convicted felon, pathological liar and dangerous sociopath”
This proves that Trump is not being targeted based on a desire to hold the powerful accountable under the rule of law, but to add another title to his already lengthy alias. While Trump settles for two or three words, notably ‘Crooked Hillary’ and ‘Sleepy Joe Biden’, his opposition takes each of their legal triumphs, not election triumphs, against him and turns it into a campaign slogan, as well as his official title. To some, Trump is a former president, but if you are a member of the illiberal liberal class, he is a twice impeached, convicted felon, pathological liar, and a dangerous sociopath. The latter two characteristics are true of Biden as well, but his state of mental decay is seemingly enough to garner sympathy from pathetic weasels whose only purpose is to ensure his victory over Trump. Being a corpse shields him from the criticism he deserves not just for his crimes and failures as president, but throughout his decades long career in Washington. However, cretins like Scarborough and Krugman say that although they want Biden to step aside for the good of America, they love Biden and proclaim that he is a wonderful man who has presided over the most successful presidencies in recent memory. All these proclamations do is boost Biden’s ego and justify his stubbornness in continuing his presidential campaign. His refusal to step aside does not make him heroic, it makes him arrogant and self-absorbed. We already knew he was, his behavior since his debate disaster is only confirmation.
Biden and his acolytes are living in a delusion if they believe they can still defeat Trump handily. Instead of openly admit that what right wing media has been reporting on for years now is true, that Biden is in a state of mental decay, Biden’s cronies are, like Wilson’s, still pretending that Biden just had a bad day, as he said himself in his first sit down interview since the debate with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. In this interview, Biden also made a plethora of pathetic excuses for his abysmal performance. These included over-preparation and Trump apparently shouting while his mic was off. Biden said this as he was pretending to take responsibility for his failure. For example, at one point early in the interview he said “Well, it came to me I was havin’ a bad night when I realized that even when I was answering a question, even though they turned his mic off, he was still shouting. And I– I let it distract me. I– I’m not blaming it on that, but I realized that I just wasn’t in control.”[xvi] This debate and its parameters were tightly controlled by CNN to cater to Biden. At no point was Trump shouting or screaming while his mic was on or off. In fact, Trump was unusually disciplined and measured in his performance. CNN’s set up benefitted him, restraining him and letting him stand by silently as Biden fumbled and spoke in garbled nonsense. Biden says he is not blaming his poor performance on Trump’s ‘shouting’, which was likely going on in Biden’s head, but he is reaching to blame anyone and anything but himself.
In refusing to do what he would he truly put country above himself, Biden is becoming what he is campaigning against. He is the embodiment of the illiberal liberal class. He captured this when responding to Stephanopoulos questioning whether Biden staying in the race despite his obvious frailties contradicts his argument that Trump only cares about himself by saying “Oh, come on. Well, I don’t think those critics know what they’re talkin’ about.”, and he reacted to being told he’s behind Trump in the polls and his debate performance has done nothing to improve his numbers by doing exactly what Trump does when he was faced with unfavorable poll numbers and approval ratings, mocking dismissal.[xvii] As Norman Solomon notes, “Apparently, Biden’s ego has proven to be much more resilient than his cognition, while loved ones and sycophants in concentric inner and outer circles cling desperately to talking points that are patently dishonest, often preposterous, and virulently dangerous for prospects of preventing a second Trump presidency.”[xviii] Biden may be mumbling cadaver, but his ego is seemingly the only part of his mind that is still intact. Even if he were to step down, it is unclear who would replace him. With the nomination and then the election so close, the Democratic party have trapped themselves. As Branko Marcetic notes, this is entirely a crisis of their own making, Biden has been protected just as Wilson was after his stroke and subsequent paralytic state.[xix] Despite the claims from people like Jen Psaki and others, there were no fair primaries. In some states the primaries were outright cancelled and only Biden’s name was put on delegates ballots, and in New Hampshire, their primary was considered invalid by the DNC elite. Biden’s name was not in the running for their primary contest. Marcetic argues rightly that it is not Biden’s mental incapacity that is causing them to panic, it is their loss of control over the narrative on Biden’s incapacity, and he writes that the debate nullified all the smear jobs The White House did to outlets like The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal when they reported on Biden’s mental fitness, as “What happened last night was that it finally became impossible for them to keep pretending.”[xx] Marcetic is partially correct here, as the Biden regime will work overtime to uphold the delusion, and some ardent Democrats will be duped. Whether it’s enough, and whether independent voters are fooled, is unlikely.
Pretending is all the Biden regime can do. It’s all they’ve been doing, they’ve just been caught, and the world witnessed in real time the extent of the biggest cover up in recent history, Biden’s senility. Now when Trump and his acolytes call Biden a doddering fool who can’t form a basic sentence, they will be proven right and the illiberal liberal class’s attempts to contest these attacks will be met with derision and mockery, as they should have been years ago. The Biden regime is unwittingly helping Trump win re-election in November, as Jeff Cohen and Solomon note in response to Biden’s interview with Stephanopoulos “Biden’s frequent dalliance with magical thinking rather than realism makes him the most powerful de facto ally that Donald Trump has in his quest to regain the White House.”[xxi] Biden remaining the Democratic nominee ensures the destruction of his party and the victory of Trump, the alleged enemy of democracy.
Biden is contradicting his 2024 campaign’s claim to be fighting for democracy by insisting that it is only him, the most unpopular president in recent memory, who can defeat Trump, and shame on him and shame on his coterie of power obsessed, corrupt, greedy, witless advisers, like his son Hunter and wife Dr. Jill, who did a cover interview for Vogue magazine in which she made the case for her husband staying in the presidential race, saying that “Democracy is on the line.”[xxii] These people deserve contempt, not adoration.
Conclusion
Beyond whether Biden can or should run again in this presidential race and serve another four years, he is currently the president. This means that the person who is now serving as the US president is unable to form sentences and to comprehend and communicate at all, and this is the bigger and more consequential story that the Trump-Biden debate should have ignited, and it is not being discussed. Political pundits and donors are instead busy chattering about whether Biden can run against Trump, and many believe he’s not, thus he must be replaced in a soft coup orchestrated by the donor class. They are not concerned that if the president cannot speak in a 90-minute debate, then how can he speak to foreign leaders and attend summits, like the NATO summit being hosted by the US this week.
The primary revelation from Biden’s debate falter and its fallout is that he is a puppet of a shadow government, deep state, permanent regime, whatever their preferred pronouns are, as he cannot possibly be managing anything with his mental feebleness. However, in a letter to Hill Democrats, Biden again expressed his desire to continue his campaign, arguing that because of his impressive record, if the Democrats unify and rally behind him, that he can easily defeat Trump in the election.[xxiii] He oddly claims that it is him who stands with working class Americans, and it is Trump and the MAGA Republicans who stand with the mega rich and corporations. That may be true, but it is equally true of Biden as well. It is his major donors who are, behind the scenes, plotting a potential soft coup to remove Biden from the race. He also claims in the letter that Trump will enable Big Pharma to charge as much as they want for drugs like insulin, however, it was the Biden regime who tried to mandate that companies who employ 100 or more people to require Covid vaccinations by decree.[xxiv] The Supreme Court blocked the mandate from all businesses, but they allowed it for health care workers.[xxv] Biden also argues that Trump and the MAGA Republicans will impose a national abortion ban. This is not true, as recently, the RNC, at the behest of Trump, removed a national abortion ban from their policy agenda.[xxvi] Further, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the Biden regime did nothing to back up their rhetoric decrying the decision. Trump has opted for the ‘leave it to the states’ approach, as he articulated in his debate with Biden, and, to the chagrin of the religious right, the RNC has shifted its abortion policy to bend to Trump.[xxvii] This is politically savvy for Trump to do, as abortion is one issue that the Biden regime and the Democrats have a position that is more popular than the religious right and most conservatives, not the few who advocate for 8- or 9-month abortions, but for guaranteed access to early term abortions.
Biden’s letter to Congressional Democrats is filled with lies that bolster the mythology of him as a fantastic president whose accomplishments are unmatched by anyone, especially Trump. He may be running against Trump, but Biden is behaving just like Trump, as he is having a meltdown akin to Trump’s after his election loss in 2020. This meltdown was tragically captured in his shouty, deluded interview with Scarborough on his show, Morning Joe, in which he went full Trump and railed against the DNC and media elites who want him out. He said, “I’m getting so frustrated by the elites — now I’m not talking about you guys — the elites in the party, ‘Oh, they know so much more.’ Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention,”[xxviii] This sounds exactly like Trump’s rants against the deep state and the elites in the Republican party. Biden and his regime are losing it, and in November they will likely lose it all. The Democrats have made their bed. Now they will have to lie in it- Biden already is.
